Case Study - RWDI / Wilkinson Murray

Canadian Engineering firm RWDI recently acquired Sydney based Acoustical engineering business Wilkinson Murray. Corporate Imagery were contacted by the RWDI design team to Photograph their new Sydney colleagues.

Our brief was to take portraits and headshots of the team in a style identical to their other offices around the world. In this case lively headshots on a pure white background.. They also wanted some images shot of the engineers at work with some iconic Sydney landmarks visible in the background.

The further challenge was that not all of the staff were available at their offices in Crows Nest on the day so a couple of them came to our studio in Ryde a few days later. Having a set up that was replicable and consistent across both locations was therefore key.

First to the headshots. Shooting on a white background takes a fair bit of setting up. We took in a seamless white paper roll for the shoot at their offices. As some of the directors needed to have full length shots the paper needed to be rolled down for them to stand on. We then had to light the background , normally for headshots I would place a light directly behind the subject to light the background, but these would be visible in the full length shots so instead we had 2 lights positioned either side of the backdrop to light it. Our main light was a large Octa Softbox which produces a beautiful soft light. We also had a fill light as the brief was for fairly flat lighting without lots of shadows.

It was the same set up in the studio but on this occasion we had the luxury of using the full width paper backdrop whereas we too in a half sized one (1.5m) to their offices.

For the location shoots we were fortunate that one of SMs current projects was to measure noise pollution at the Sydney Metro construction site in McMahons Point. This gave us the opportunity to get the Sydney Harbour Bridge and the Sydney Opera House in the background.
