Ashes to Ashes
Product Photography is just one of the many types of imagery that fits under our Brand Imagery banner. In our Ryde studio we have the equipment necessary to photograph products of all sizes (well most… we may have to photograph your car somewhere else)
Recently we had the opportunity to photograph some products for a local business that were to be showcased in an Amazon store. The products in question were ceramic urns to be used specifically for deceased pets ashes. The urns are very glossy meaning that photographing them without seeing reflections everywhere was going to be challenge.
We have a lightbox specifically for this purpose, you can see in the image below this is a cube of soft white diffusing material that allows light to wrap around the products without causing distracting reflections. We lit this with two other soft boxes placed either side of the box. Thats a lot of light diffusion.
The next challenge is how to avoid the reflection from the camera in the urns. This one is ta bit trickier. the front of the lightbox folds up leaving just a slit for the lens. Any remaining part of the slit was covered using a large envelope (sometimes the best equipment is what you can find to hand).
The final part of reflection removal happens in photoshop - this is where we remove the lens altogether as well as cleaning any other dust spots, scratches and reflections of small creases in the backdrop. We then cut the photo out of the image, apply it to a crisp white background and add a small shadow to add dimension to the image. And the results are lovely.
